Class A Mavs, Bucs split

The Class A Missoula Mavericks and the Bitterroot Bucs split a pair of American Legion games at Lindborg-Cregg Field.

The Bucs got first blood, scoring a 19-14 victory in an opening game that saw the two team combine on 26 hits.

Matt Perez finished 4-for-4 with five RBIs and five runs scored for Bitterroot. He sparked the Bucs to their big run output with a grand slam in the third inning.

Missoula's Derrick Dauenhauer finished 2-for-4 with a triple and four RBIs. Brody Miller finished 4-for-5 for the Mavs.

The second game belonged to Missoula as the Mavs got a complete game from pitcher Andrew Schmautz in a 9-3 win.

Brody Miller went 2-for-4 for Missoula with a double and a pair of RBIs. Robbie King finished 3-for-4, while Jordan Schafer was 2-for-3. Each had an RBI.

For Bitterroot, Xavier Morigeau knocked a two-run home run in the seventh inning.

A Mavs win twice

The Class A Missoula Mavericks wrapped up their own tournament with a pair of wins Sunday at Lindborg-Cregg Field.

The Mavs beat Post Falls, Idaho, 16-2, and the Bitterroot Red Sox 8-7.

Andrew Schmautz went 3-for-4 with five RBIs, including a bases-clearing triple in the nine-run third inning, to pace the Mavs against Post Falls. Brady Satake was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.

Riley King picked up his first win on the mound, striking out four while walking just one.

The Mavs beat the Red Sox with a run in the top of the seventh. Schmautz doubled and advanced to third on Andrew Bewley's single. King then drove home Schmautz with a single for the winning margin.

Bewley finished 3-for-4 while Connor Anderson was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and King was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Jordan Schafer picked up the win in relief of CJ Wulf.

Rodee Anderson was 2-for-3 with two runs scored for the Red Sox and Drew Brown was 2-for-3.

Walla Walla, Wash., finished 5-0 to win the tournament championship. The Red Sox beat Dillon 18-5 in their other game of the day.

The Mavs (28-23), who went 2-3 in the tournament, travel to Hamilton to face the Red Sox on Tuesday.

A Mavs drop a pair

The Class A Missoula Mavs dropped a pair of games in the second day of their American Legion baseball tournament at Lindborg-Cregg Field.

Missoula dropped an 11-2 decision to Walla Walla, Wash., and then was edged by the Class A Great Falls Stallions, 7-6.

Matt Wujek held the Mavs to just two runs on two hits in the early game, while Sethridge Hampson had a double and drove in four runs to lead Walla Walla at the plate.

Robby King singled in both of Missoula's runs in the top of the second to lead the Mavs.

Tyler Stansich pitched a complete game with seven strikeouts to lead Great Falls to the late win.

Taylor Davis and Trevor Wilke each had RBI singles in the top of the eighth to lead the Stallions to the come-from-behind win.

Brody Miller was a perfect 2-for-2 with an RBI to lead Missoula.

The Mavs continue tourney play Sunday against Post Falls, Idaho, at 5:15 p.m. and the Bitterroot Red Sox at 8 p.m.

Mavs sweep Butte

At Lindborg-Cregg Field, the Class A Missoula Mavericks took a pair of nonconference games from the Butte Muckers.

Missoula won the first game 8-6 and the nightcap 4-3.

Andrew Schmautz was 3-for-4 with a two-run double in the Mavericks' six-run second inning in the first game. David Resner was 3-for-3 with two runs scored to back the pitching of Brent Daugherty, who improved to 4-1.

Schmautz was 2-for-3 with a bases-clearing double in Missoula's three-run third inning in the nightcap. He also had a triple. Jordan Schafer picked up the save by throwing the final two innings in relief of winner Matt McMann (3-3).

Missoula (16-9) travels to face the Bozeman Spikes on Sunday.
