Missoula Mavericks Memorial Tournament
June 21-24, 2018
The Missoula Mavericks American Legion AA baseball team will host its 39th annual Memorial Tournament June 21-24, 2018. The tournament was first held in 1980 to honor standout player Scott Klaudt who played with the team from 1978-80.
In 2018, teams from Idaho and Washington will come to town for the tournament. All games will be held at the Mavericks home field, Lindborg-Cregg.
In 2011, the Mavs board of directors and Scott’s parents, Neal and Caryl, supported a change to rename the tournament to honor all Maverick players who have passed away. This year’s tournament also remembers Tanner Kahler, one of the best players in Mav history. Kahler, who played from 1998-2000, holds the Mavs’ career record for highest slugging percentage. He still holds the second highest career batting average for the AA Mavs. Kahler died in a car accident in 2011, leaving behind two young sons and his parents Patta and Marv Kahler.
The Memorial Tournament also pays tribute to Patrick Guffey, a Mav player from 1999-2001. Patrick was one of four A players who moved up to AA for the state tournament in ’99. He played baseball at Miles City Community College before returning to Missoula and UM. Pat died in a swimming accident in 2003. His parents are Mea Andrews and Dave Guffey of Missoula.
Klaudt was a standout pitcher and infielder for the Mavericks and was a star in the classroom as well. He maintained a 3.5 GPA at Hellgate High School and was just days from graduation when he was killed in an auto accident in 1980.
